Prof. Tommaso Luciano Todisco

Chief Physician of the Pulmonary and Respiratory Intensive Care Unit till 2008.
Prof. T. Todisco specialized in Lung Disease at Pisa University, in Heart Disease and Rheumatology at Pisa University, in Space and Aeronautical Medicine Rome University and in General Medicine at Pisa University.
University Career:
Confirmed Associate Professor in Cardiorespiratory Pathophisiology and then in Respiratory Pathophysiology and Tisiology. Contract Professor in the Residency Programmes of Cardiology, Oncology and Internal Medicine at Perugia University (1980-1998) as well as the integrated course of Lung Disease, for fourth year graduation students from 1992-1997.
He completed his professional training in lung disease at Nancy University (Prof. P. Sadoul), Ulm and Freibourg Universities (Prof. H. Matthys), and at Boston University (Prof. G. Snider) and in cardiology at London University (Prof. Bestermann).
He is a member of the following national societies:
1) Associazione Italiana Pneumologi Ospedalieri (AIPO)
2) Federazione Italiana per la Lotta contro la Tubercolosi e le malattie polmonari sociali.
Prof. Todisco was founder and chairman of the Umbrian chapter of AIPO from 1990 to 1994 and he was Chairman of the Associzione regionale Umbra della Federazione Italiana per la Lotta contro la Tubercolosi from 1989-1999.
Furthermore he is member of the following International societies:
3) European Respiatory Society;
4) American College of Chest Physicians and Surgeons;
5) American Thoracic Society;
6) International Society for Aerosols in Medicine;
7) International Association for Medical Assistance to Travellers (IAMAT – with headquarters in Canada, New Zeland,

8) International Immunocompromised Host Society.
Prof. Todisco was nominated Italian Representative of the International Society for Aerosols in Medicine from 1990-2000 and he is the Italian delegate of the International Respiratory Care Club since 1995.
Hospital Career:
Past-Chief Physician of the Pulmonary and Respiratory Intensive Care Unit at the Perugia Hospital. The ward, with the most modern equipment, has been a vanguard for therapeutic and diagnostic technology. The ward has
all the currently
available techniques for the treatment of respiratory failure, Respiratory Pathophysiology and interventional pulmonology (fiberoptic bronchoscopy, rigid and laser, prostheses, removal of inhaled foreign bodies, CT guided transbronchial biopsy).
In the field of clinical pharmacology Prof. Todisco has performed numerous studies on drugs which are today used extensively in respiratory medicine: antibiotics, cortisone, theophyllines, afrenergic beta 2 agonists, mucokinetics, inotropic active drugs, and anti hypertensives in the aim of improving their therapeutic applicability to lung diseases.
Under Prof. Todisco’s guidance the following new clinico-therapeutical procedures have been introduced in Umbria:
1) Long term domiciliary oxygen therapy (LTOT) with liquid oxygen;
2) Respiratory Home Care with mechanical ventilators, LTOT and psychotherapeutic support for patients with chronic respiratory failure;
3) ambulatory and intensive respiratory rehabilitation;
4) creation of the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU) within the Pulmonary Unit at the S. Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Perugia with external negative pressure ventilators (iron lung and poncho wrap) or positive pressure (N-CPAP, PPI) with principally non invasive procedures. This facility is the only one in Umbria;
5) non surgical treatment of pneumothorax with thoracic micro-drainage;
6) diagnostic-therapeutic thoracic sound scan;
7) continuous on-call service for broncoscopy and bronchial asthma (SOS asthma);
8) Interventional pneumology (removal of inhaled foreign bodies, endobronchial lasertherapy with rigid and flexible bronchoscope);
9)
Treatment of OSAS and management of the tracheostomy tubes from opening to closing.
